Building the Course Structure

Overview

Once a new course has been created, content and structure may be added to the course using Containers, nested Containers and Learning Objects.

Here is an example of a course in Design View that already has Containers and Learning Objects in place:

Containers

After you access the course, you will see the area below the blue section where you will build your course layout and structure. This is where Containers, nested Containers, and Learning Objects will be placed and configured.

Containers, like the one in the example below, are a visual grouping of Learning Objects and nested Containers. A Container could represent a topic/subject, a week, a module, etc.  It is at the discretion of the designer of the content to determine the appropriate grouping, labeling, number of objects, etc. per container.

Adding Learning Objects creates visual structure and order for where content will be added.

Adding nested Containers allows you to create a “subgroup” within the original Container.

Adding Containers

To add a new Container:

  1. Locate the New Container icon.
  2. Left-click and hold the New Container icon using your mouse.
  3. Drag the icon onto the course and release the mouse.
  4. Verify that the new Container appears.
  5. Click the Save button to save the course Container placement/structure.

Adding Nested Containers

Containers may also be nested where there can be one or multiple Containers inside of another Container. The nesting feature allows only one level of nesting inside the main Container.

To create a new nested Container:

  1. Identify where you would like the nested Container to be located.
  2. Left-click and hold the New Container icon using your mouse.
  3. Drag the icon onto the desired container and release the mouse.
  4. Verify that the new nested container appears.

Naming/Labeling Containers

To add or change the name of a Container:

  1. Locate the Container whose name you wish to change.
  2. Click inside of the Container title box to edit.

  1. Type in the new name/title for the Container and click the check mark.

Repeat the steps above to change the name of any Container or nested Container.

Understanding the Container Summary Section

The Container summary section displays three main pieces of information:

Number of Objects

Total number of points

Total Time estimate

The number of objects is calculated based on all objects within the Container and any Container nested within it. A nested Container only displays its own object totals.

The total number of points is calculated based on all of the points of all objects within the Container and the nested Container. A nested Container only displays its own object totals.

Total number of hours is calculated based on all of the time estimates of all of the objects within the Container and the nested Container within it. A nested Container displays only its own time estimate total.

The summary section is very useful during the design phase of course development. Once the course is published, this information will become visible to student and faculty roles as well.

Deleting Containers

To remove a Container:

  1. Place the mouse cursor over the Container you wish to remove.
  2. Left-click, hold and drag the Container to the right side of the screen. A Trash Can icon will appear.
  3. Release the mouse over the Trash Can to delete the Container. You may delete nested Containers in the same manner.
  4. Verify that the Container is no longer visible in the course.
  5. Click the Save button to save the changes to the course structure.

Note: Once a Container or nested Container has been deleted, it cannot be retrieved. Any Learning Objects or content that was inside of a Container will be deleted with the Container.

Adding Learning Objects

Learning Objects contain all of the content for the course. To add a Learning Object:

  1. With your mouse, left-click and hold the New Learning Object icon.
  2. Drag the Learning Object icon into the course Container or onto the course outside of the Container.
  3. Release the mouse button.
  4. Verify that the object has been placed.
  5. Repeat the process until you have as many Learning Objects as needed.
  6. Click the Save button to save the course structure.

Deleting Learning Objects

To delete a Learning Object:

  1. Place the mouse cursor over the object you wish to remove.
  2. Left-click, hold and drag the object to the right side of the screen. A Trash Can icon will appear.
  3. Release the mouse over the Trash Can to delete the object.
  4. Verify that the object is no longer in the course.
  5. Click the Save button to save the changes to the course structure.

Note: Once an object has been deleted, it cannot be retrieved. Any content that was inside of the object is not retrievable if it was not sent to the Repository.
